Burner number

"Burner" originally meant a cheap prepaid phone bought with cash and thrown away. Today the word mostly describes the number rather than the handset. People searching for a burner number usually want one of these:

• Burner-style apps that issue a second number, often from VoIP ranges, which can be deleted and replaced from the app.
• Prepaid SIM cards used for a short period, subject to local SIM registration rules.
• Temporary numbers for receiving one or a few messages.
• Second numbers kept longer but used only for a specific part of life, such as online selling or dating.

The common thread is separation: the burner absorbs contact from people or services you do not want reaching your main line.

• Privacy vs continuity. Discarding a number protects you from ongoing contact but breaks any account tied to it. If you used it for sign-up, you may later need it for 2FA or recovery, and it may have been recycled to someone else.
• Line type. App-issued burner numbers are frequently VoIP, which some services decline during verification.
• Shared vs assigned. A number exclusively assigned to you is private; a number on a public inbox is not.
