Virtual number
A virtual number is a phone number that is not tied to a physical SIM card in a specific handset and is instead delivered through software, most often over VoIP, so calls and texts reach an app, browser or phone system.

How virtual numbers work
With a traditional mobile line, a SIM card authenticates a device to a mobile network, and the network routes calls and SMS to that device. A virtual number removes the SIM from the picture. The number is hosted by a provider's platform, and inbound traffic is routed over the internet to wherever the user chooses: a softphone app, a web dashboard, a desk phone or a forwarding destination.
In practice, "virtual number" is an umbrella term people search for. It commonly covers:
- VoIP numbers from cloud telephony and calling apps (see VoIP number).
- DIDs routed into business phone systems.
- Call-forwarding numbers that ring another line.
- App-based second-line numbers used on an existing smartphone.
The underlying numbers can come from landline, non-geographic or VoIP-designated ranges, and sometimes from mobile ranges, depending on the provider and country.
Why the line type matters for verification
Many apps run a carrier lookup before sending a code. If the lookup reports the number as VoIP or fixed-line rather than mobile, the service may refuse it, because its risk rules favor mobile lines. Each platform decides which numbers it accepts, and the rules change over time, so no number type is universally accepted.
This is the main trade-off: virtual numbers are usually cheap, instant and flexible, but numbers from VoIP ranges are more likely to be declined for SMS verification. Our explainer on why apps reject phone numbers covers the mechanics.
