P2P SMS (person-to-person)
P2P SMS (person-to-person SMS) is text messaging exchanged directly between individual people, typically conversational, low-volume and sent manually from one personal phone number to another.

How P2P SMS differs from A2P
Carriers classify traffic by who sends it and how, not by the content alone:

Personal mobile plans are priced and provisioned for P2P use. Messages are expected to have a roughly balanced ratio of sent to received, go to a limited number of recipients, and be typed by a human.
Why the distinction matters
Carriers watch for "grey route" traffic: business messages disguised as person-to-person to avoid A2P registration or pricing. Signals include very high send rates, identical messages to many recipients, and links typical of marketing or phishing. Lines that look like this can be filtered, throttled or suspended.
For ordinary users this means a second number is fine for normal conversations, but not for bulk campaigns.
