Why PhoneBorn is crypto-only (and the trade-offs)

PhoneBorn accepts cryptocurrency only. Here is the honest reasoning: privacy, global access and final payments, plus the real trade-offs and how paying actually works.

By PhoneBorn Team7 min read

PhoneBorn is crypto-only because it lets us run a privacy-first service without collecting card numbers or billing addresses, accept customers from almost anywhere, and keep payments final and simple. It has real trade-offs: price volatility, network fees, a learning curve and no undo. Here is our reasoning, and how paying works.

We know "crypto only" can sound like a barrier, and for some people it is. We'd rather explain the decision openly than bury it at checkout. This post covers why we made the choice, what it costs you, how the payment flow works, and what we simply can't do. For a general guide to paying for online services with cryptocurrency, see our privacy-first crypto payments guide.

Nothing here is investment advice. We treat cryptocurrency purely as a way to pay.

Reason 1: privacy that matches the product

People come to PhoneBorn for a second phone number that keeps their personal number private. Our account model is built around that: sign-up needs an email and password, with no name, ID documents, address or existing phone number. We don't do KYC.

Card payments pull in the opposite direction. A card payment usually involves a cardholder name, a billing address, the card number itself and fraud-screening data. Even when a payment processor holds that data rather than the merchant, it creates a record that links an identity to the purchase. Accepting cards would mean asking customers for exactly the details the rest of the product avoids.

With crypto, we never see or store card data, because there isn't any. That also means one less category of sensitive data that could be exposed in a breach. Our security page and privacy policy describe what we do store to run the service.

It is worth being precise: crypto is not anonymous by default. Most blockchains are public ledgers, and if you bought coins on an exchange that verified your identity, that exchange may be able to link your purchase to you. What crypto-only payment does is keep payment identity out of our systems. The existing guide linked above goes into what crypto privacy does and doesn't give you.

Reason 2: access from almost anywhere

We offer numbers in around 200 countries, and our customers are spread just as widely. Card acceptance is uneven across borders: cross-border payments can be declined by an issuer's risk rules, some cards aren't accepted by international merchants, and some people don't have a card that works online at all.

A crypto payment works the same way wherever the payer is. If you can get stablecoins or another supported coin into a wallet, you can pay us. That makes the service reachable for people who would otherwise be shut out, including many freelancers, travellers and people in countries with limited card options. It isn't universal, since local rules on crypto vary, but for us it is the most widely available single method.

Reason 3: final payments and simple pricing

Card payments can be reversed through chargebacks. That protects consumers, and it is a good system for many businesses. For services like phone numbers, though, reversals are a known route for abuse: someone can use a number and then dispute the charge. Merchants in that position typically respond with more identity checks, more fraud screening and higher prices to cover losses.

Crypto payments are final once confirmed. That lets us keep sign-up light and pricing flat: From $1.80/month on the 12-month plan, one price in every country, with 1-, 3- and 6-month terms also available (all term prices are shown at checkout).

Final payments don't mean you're unprotected. We handle fairness through our own policies instead:

  • 7-day money-back guarantee on plans: if your number hasn't sent or received a single SMS or call, you can get a full refund within 7 days of purchase. It goes to your PhoneBorn wallet, requested from the dashboard. See the refund policy.
  • OTP orders refund automatically to your wallet if no code arrives within the order window, and cancelling before a code arrives also refunds in full.

The trade-offs, honestly

Crypto-only is a choice with costs. Here are the main ones and how to reduce them.

Trade-offWhat it means for youHow to reduce it
Price volatilityCoins like BTC or ETH can move in value between buying and payingPay with a USD stablecoin such as USDT or USDC
Network feesEach blockchain charges a fee to send a transactionChoose a lower-fee network where your wallet supports it
Learning curveWallets, networks and addresses are new to many peopleStart with a small wallet top-up to learn the flow
IrreversibilityA payment sent to the wrong address or network may be unrecoverableScan the QR code, check the network, send the exact amount
Exchange identityBuying crypto on a regulated exchange often involves ID checksUnderstand this before relying on crypto for privacy
UnderpaymentSending less than the invoice amount isn't credited automaticallyAccount for your wallet's fees so the full amount arrives

Our wallet balance is held in USD, so once a top-up is credited, its value doesn't move with the coin you paid with.

How paying works

There are two ways to pay.

Top up your wallet

Your PhoneBorn account has a prepaid USD wallet. You top it up with crypto and then spend the balance on phone-number plans, renewals and OTP numbers. Refunds, such as money-back requests and expired OTP orders, return to the same wallet.

Direct checkout for phone-number plans

For a phone-number plan, you can also pay with a direct crypto checkout at purchase, without topping up first.

The invoice itself

Whichever path you take, the flow looks like this:

  1. Choose a coin and network. We accept BTC, ETH, USDT, USDC, LTC, TRX, BNB, SOL, DOGE and more. Stablecoins are supported on TRON, Polygon, BSC, Base and Solana. Some other coins are handled via a payment processor.
  2. Get an exact-amount invoice. The invoice shows the precise amount of the coin to send, a deposit address and a QR code.
  3. Send from your wallet. Scan the QR code or copy the address and amount. Double-check the network matches the invoice.
  4. Wait for confirmations. Once the transaction confirms on the blockchain, the payment is credited.

If you send too little, the invoice isn't credited automatically; our support team reviews underpaid invoices. That's why it matters that the amount that arrives matches the invoice, so check whether your wallet or exchange deducts its fee from the amount sent.

What we can't do

To be clear about the limits:

  • No cards. We don't accept credit or debit cards.
  • No bank transfers. We don't accept wire or bank payments.
  • No other payment apps. Crypto is the only method.
  • No refunds to cards or banks. Refunds go to your PhoneBorn wallet.
  • No reversing blockchain mistakes. We can't recover coins sent to the wrong network or address.
  • No investment advice. We can't tell you which coin to hold or when to buy.

If crypto-only doesn't work for you, that is a fair reason to choose a different provider. We'd rather say so than surprise you at checkout.

Who crypto-only suits, and who it doesn't

Crypto-only tends to suit people who already hold stablecoins or use a crypto wallet, people who value keeping card and billing details out of yet another company's systems, and people whose cards are often declined by overseas merchants.

It is a poor fit if you have never used a wallet and don't want to learn, if your employer needs to pay through a corporate card or invoice, or if crypto is restricted where you live. In those cases a card-based provider may simply be the better choice for you, and that's fine.

Getting help

If a payment looks stuck, email [email protected] or use the contact page with your invoice details. A person replies within 24 hours, 7 days a week. Common questions are also answered in the FAQ.

FAQ

Which coin should I pay with?

Many people use a USD stablecoin to avoid price swings between buying and paying. We can't advise on holding any cryptocurrency; this is not investment advice.

Why can't I pay by card if I don't mind sharing my details?

Offering cards to some customers would bring card data, chargebacks and the related fraud checks into the whole service. Staying crypto-only keeps the model simple for everyone.

Is paying with crypto anonymous?

Not automatically. Blockchains are public, and exchanges may know who you are. Crypto-only means we don't collect card or billing identity.

What if I send too little?

Underpaid invoices aren't credited automatically. Contact support with the invoice details and the team will review it.
