Telegram number requirements explained (2026)

Telegram ties every account to a phone number, but it also lets you hide that number almost completely. Here is what Telegram requires, what it shows, and how to stay in control.

By PhoneBorn TeamUpdated 7 min read

Telegram requires a phone number to create an account, and that number stays linked to the account as its identity. It does not need to be your main number, and it does not need to be visible to anyone: Telegram lets you hide the number, use a username instead, and protect the account with a separate password.

Below we go through what Telegram actually asks for in 2026, how login codes reach you, and the settings that decide how exposed your number is. Telegram updates its apps frequently, so details may differ slightly on your version.

The core requirement: one number, one account

Every Telegram account is registered to a phone number. You enter it during sign-up, receive a code, and from then on the number acts as the account's anchor. A few consequences follow:

  • One number maps to one account. You cannot register two separate Telegram accounts on the same number. If you want a second account, you need a second number.
  • The number is used for logins. When you sign in on a new device, Telegram needs to confirm you control the number or an existing session.
  • The number outlives the sign-up. If you lose access to it, you may lose your only way back in on new devices.

That last point is the one people underestimate. The number is not a one-time hurdle; it is the key to the account.

Which numbers Telegram accepts

Telegram does not publish a detailed list of accepted number types, and each platform decides for itself which numbers it will send codes to. In general, Telegram has been more flexible than some apps, but a few patterns are consistent:

  • Mobile numbers are the most dependable choice. A real mobile number on a carrier range receives SMS codes through normal routes.
  • Some internet-only ranges may be refused or never receive a code. Our explainer on why apps reject some numbers covers how services tell number types apart.
  • Numbers with heavy reuse can be restricted. A number that has been used for many recent registrations may be treated with suspicion.
  • Public receive-SMS numbers are unsafe. Anyone can read the code and log in to your account.

Telegram has also supported so-called anonymous numbers bought through Fragment, a separate blockchain-based platform. These numbers work only inside Telegram and have no SIM or SMS behind them. They are an option some people use, but they are a Telegram-specific product with their own rules, so read the current terms carefully if you consider them.

How Telegram delivers login codes

Telegram's code delivery is different from most apps, which is why people are sometimes surprised by where their code shows up.

SituationWhere the code usually goes
New sign-up, no existing sessionSMS to the number (sometimes a call or other fallback)
Login on a new device, already logged in elsewhereA message inside your existing Telegram app
Login with email set up for codesThe login email, in some regions and app versions
Existing session unavailableSMS, if Telegram decides to send one

In other words, if you already have Telegram open on another phone or computer, check that app first. The code often arrives there as a message from the official Telegram account, not by SMS. Login codes are typically five digits.

At the time of writing, Telegram also asks some users to add a login email during sign-up, and may send codes there instead of by SMS. Whether you see this depends on your region, platform and app version.

Who can see your number

This is where Telegram differs most from WhatsApp. You can keep your number almost entirely private. Under Settings > Privacy and Security > Phone Number you will find two separate controls:

  1. Who can see my phone number. Set it to Nobody and people you chat with will not see your number, unless they already have it saved in their contacts.
  2. Who can find me by my number. Set it to My Contacts to stop strangers who have your number from looking you up.

Combine that with a username, and people can message you through @yourname without ever learning your number. You can change or remove the username at any time.

A practical tip: even with these settings, anyone who already has your number in their address book may be matched to your account. If you want complete separation between Telegram and your personal life, register with a second phone number that you do not hand out elsewhere.

Protecting the account

Because the number is the key, Telegram offers a second lock.

  • Two-step verification (cloud password). Under Privacy and Security, set a password that Telegram asks for after the login code on any new device. Even if someone intercepts your code, they still need the password. The 2FA glossary entry explains the idea.
  • Recovery email. Adding one lets you reset the password if you forget it.
  • Active sessions. Review Settings > Devices regularly and end any session you do not recognize.
  • Account self-destruct timer. Telegram deletes accounts after a period of inactivity that you choose, with options ranging from about a month to a year or more. If you use a secondary account rarely, set a longer period so it is not removed while you are away.

Changing the number on an existing account

Telegram lets you move an account to a new number without losing chats, contacts or groups. At the time of writing, the option is under Settings, by tapping your number and choosing to change it. You need to receive a code on the new number to confirm it.

Do this before your old number lapses. If the old number is gone and you are logged out everywhere, you may be unable to receive a login code at all, and Telegram has limited options for recovering an account whose number you no longer control. Our guide to keeping your number for 2FA explains why lapsed numbers are such a common cause of lockouts.

Common problems and legitimate fixes

  • The code "was sent" but you do not see it. Check your other Telegram sessions first. Then check SMS.
  • "Too many attempts, please try again later." Telegram has applied a waiting period. Wait it out; repeated requests extend it. The glossary on SMS rate limiting explains why services do this.
  • The number is reported as invalid. Confirm the country code and remove any leading trunk zero.
  • The number is reported as banned. Telegram restricts numbers it associates with spam or abuse. Use the appeal route Telegram provides in the app or on its official support pages. Registering a different number to get around a ban breaks Telegram's rules.
  • No SMS at all on a new sign-up. The number type or route may be the problem. See why codes never arrive.

A quick checklist before you sign up

  • Decide which number the account will live on for years, not just today.
  • Make sure you can read SMS on it from wherever you will be.
  • Choose your privacy settings and username right after registering.
  • Set a two-step verification password and a recovery email.
  • Note the renewal date of the number somewhere you will see it.

Using PhoneBorn for Telegram

If you want a Telegram account that is separate from your personal life, PhoneBorn offers real mobile numbers that are assigned to one customer at a time and stay yours as long as you renew. You read incoming SMS in a browser, which is handy when you are signing up on a desktop app. Telegram decides which numbers it accepts, so every plan is backed by a 7-day replacement guarantee: if Telegram doesn't accept your number within 7 days of purchase, replace it free with a new number from the same country. A number you keep is far better for Telegram than a single-use one. More detail is on our Telegram verification page.

FAQ

Can I use Telegram without a phone number?

A phone number is required to register. Telegram has also supported anonymous numbers from Fragment, which are Telegram-only numbers without a SIM. Once registered, you can hide your number and use a username.

Do my contacts see my number on Telegram?

Only if your privacy settings allow it, or if they already have your number saved. Set "Who can see my phone number" to Nobody to keep it hidden from everyone else.

Can two Telegram accounts share one number?

No. Each number can be linked to one Telegram account. The Telegram apps let you log in to several accounts at once, but each one needs its own number.

What happens if my number is reassigned to someone else?

If they register Telegram with it and you are logged out, they could potentially request a login code. A two-step verification password is your main protection, which is why you should set one and keep your number renewed.
