Discord phone verification guide

Why some Discord servers require a verified phone, how to add, change or remove your number, and how to fix common verification errors without breaking Discord's rules.

By PhoneBorn TeamUpdated 7 min read

Discord asks for phone verification in two main situations: when a server's moderators require members to have a verified phone, and when Discord itself wants extra assurance about an account. You add a number in account settings and confirm it with a code, usually by SMS. Discord decides which numbers it accepts.

This guide explains why the check exists, how to manage your number, and what the most common errors mean. Discord updates its apps regularly, so menu names may differ slightly as of 2026.

Why servers require a verified phone

Server owners can set a verification level that new members must meet before they can talk. At the time of writing, the levels range from no requirement at all, through a verified email and minimum account or membership age, up to the highest level, which requires a verified phone number on the member's Discord account.

Moderators choose the highest level for practical reasons:

  • Slowing down raids. Coordinated waves of new accounts are harder to create when each needs a phone number.
  • Reducing spam. Spam accounts are cheap to make with email alone.
  • Making bans meaningful. When accounts are tied to phones, repeat offenders face more friction.

If a server asks you to verify your phone, the requirement comes from that server's settings, not from Discord asking every user.

When Discord itself asks

Separately from server rules, Discord may ask an account to verify a phone number if it detects activity that looks unusual or risky. You might see a prompt that the account needs verification before you can continue using it. The reasons are not always explained, and Discord's own help center is the authoritative source for what to do.

In these cases, verifying with a number you control is the normal path. If you believe the prompt is a mistake, contact Discord support rather than creating a new account.

How to add a phone number

The steps below reflect the desktop and mobile apps at the time of writing:

  1. Open User Settings (the gear icon near your username).
  2. Go to My Account.
  3. Find the Phone Number field and choose Add.
  4. Select your country and enter the number without the leading trunk zero.
  5. Complete any captcha Discord shows.
  6. Enter the code you receive and, if asked, confirm with your account password.

The number is now attached to your account and counts as a verified phone for servers that require one.

SMS or call

SMS is the standard way Discord delivers verification codes. In some situations and regions, other options may appear, but you should not count on a voice call being available. If the SMS does not arrive, see the troubleshooting section below before requesting another code.

Changing or removing your number

  • To change it, return to User Settings > My Account and edit the phone number. You will verify the new number with a code, and Discord may also ask for your password or a code on the old number.
  • To remove it, use the remove option in the same place. Keep in mind that servers with the highest verification level may stop letting you talk until you add a number again.
  • If you use SMS as a 2FA backup, update it before you lose access to the old number. Once a number lapses, you cannot receive codes on it.

Because a number can only be attached to one Discord account at a time, you may need to remove it from an old account before adding it to another one you own.

Discord 2FA and your number

Discord's two-factor authentication is built around an authenticator app. Once that is enabled, you can add SMS as a backup method using your verified number. That combination works well:

  • The authenticator app handles everyday logins.
  • Your backup codes, which Discord lets you download, cover the case where you lose your phone.
  • The SMS backup gives one more route in, as long as the number stays yours.

The 2FA glossary entry covers the difference between these methods. The main risk with any SMS backup is losing the number: if it lapses and is reassigned, someone else could receive your codes. Our guide on keeping your number for 2FA explains how to avoid that.

Number not supported

Discord, like many platforms, does not accept some number types, and it has been cautious with some VoIP ranges. The glossary entry on VoIP numbers explains what that term covers, and our article on why apps reject phone numbers goes deeper. A real mobile number is generally the dependable option.

Rate limits

Repeated requests trigger temporary limits. Wait at least 15 to 30 minutes, then try once. The glossary on SMS rate limiting describes how these limits work.

Code never arrives

Check the number format, your phone's spam or unknown-senders folder, and your signal. Our guide on why codes never arrive walks through the whole delivery chain.

Tips for server moderators

If you run a server, the phone requirement is a strong tool, but it has trade-offs worth considering:

  • It excludes some legitimate members. People without a personal phone, younger users on shared family phones and privacy-conscious members may not want to verify. Consider whether a lower level plus good moderation is enough for your community.
  • Explain the requirement. A short note in your rules or welcome channel stating why you require a verified phone reduces confused messages and support requests.
  • Combine it with other tools. Discord's onboarding, member screening, AutoMod and role-based permissions often handle spam well without the highest verification level.
  • Raise it temporarily. Some moderators switch to the highest level during a raid and lower it again afterwards.

The settings live in your server settings under safety or moderation options, and names may change between app versions.

What Discord does not allow

Discord's rules prohibit using new accounts or numbers to get around a server ban or a platform suspension, and moderators often treat ban evasion seriously. Phone verification exists partly to make that harder. If you have been banned from a server, the options are to contact its moderators or accept the decision. If your account has been actioned by Discord, use its appeal process. This guide does not cover, and we do not help with, ways around those decisions.

Using a separate number for Discord

Plenty of people prefer not to attach their personal number to a gaming or community account. A separate number keeps your main line out of that ecosystem. PhoneBorn provides real mobile numbers that are assigned to one customer at a time and stay yours while you renew, with incoming SMS readable in a browser. Discord decides which numbers it accepts, so every plan is backed by a 7-day replacement guarantee: if Discord doesn't accept your number within 7 days of purchase, replace it free with a new number from the same country, or take a full refund if the number has not sent or received a single SMS or call. For an account you will keep, a number you keep is the sensible choice. See our Discord verification page for more.

FAQ

Can I use one phone number for two Discord accounts?

At the time of writing, a number can be verified on one Discord account at a time. You would need to remove it from one account before adding it to another.

Will removing my number lock me out of servers?

It can. Servers that require a verified phone may stop letting you send messages until you add a number again.

Is my phone number visible to other users?

No. Your verified number is not shown to other members or server moderators. They only see that your account meets the server's verification level.

What if I lose access to the number on my account?

Log in with your password and authenticator app or backup codes, then add a new number in User Settings. If you cannot log in at all, contact Discord support through its help center.
